Hospitality
on the Prairie
|
The
Prairie Pillow Sportsmen's Lodge is a fourth generation operation.
It was homesteaded in 1883 by Modeste
Marin who raised 7 children on the farm.
He paid the first taxes in Walworth County
during the development of the county. Real
estate agents would bring their prospective investors and purchasers,
(as many as a dozen at a time) to the Marin farm as an example of what
could be done with the fertile soil and climate of Walworth county. He
encouraged these visits a he was very interested in the developement
of the community and the enhancement of values. At the time the now
Prairie Pillow Sportsmen's Lodge served as a stopping place to people
traveling to the river to collect wood for the winter.
His ledger shows (which is still in the family) Modeste would
charge .25 cents for room and breakfast, and an additional 10 cents to
board the animals. He also did a
lot of trading with the Indians who lived in the area.
In 1927 the farm was turned over to Warner Earl the son of
Modeste who farmed until his son Modeste took over in 1954.
That was the year that Angie came
along. Now the existing proprietor,
Angie, not knowing at that time that
her great grandfather had once lodged and fed people on the property
decided to start a place for hunters and fishermen to come and enjoy
what the area has to offer in the way of Pheasant hunting and Walleye
fishing. This was the beginning of The
Prairie Pillow Sportsmen's Lodge.....The
tradition of hospitality continues today in one of the best hunting and
fishing areas in North America.
